About the Artist

Otto was first introduced to the intricate world of wood carving at age 14 while at summer Boy Scout camp. He found the practice so inspiring that he enrolled in the Wood Badge Program, which deepened his understanding and love for the art. While in the Navy, he received his first commission carving Squadron plaques. Otto learned to truly master carving tools under the instruction of a master wood carver from Portugal.

Otto studied art and then pursued a career as a commercial artist. In 1975, Otto moved with his family to Gatlinburg, Tennessee from Evansville, Indiana. The Otto Preske, Artist in Wood, Shop opened in the spring of 1976. Otto is a charter member of the Great Smoky Arts and Crafts Community and the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce.
